I have tried to remove it and use a different SD card as well and it freezes. When it tells me it needs to prepare an SD card, it fails to mount the one I have in. For those unsure what I am referring to () it is called the Internal SD to GC Mem Slot mod. I think it has to do with the fact that my Wii also has the soldered hardmod to be able to dump directly to the SD card without the need for the SD Gecko (this was done right when the D2C's came out, before there were alternative methods to the hardmod or gecko for dumping to SD). I was able to install the Homebrew Channel from an SD card with the boot.elf. I have a Wii with a D2CKey in it and it's at 4.2u.
