I know this qualifies the drive as soft-bricked, but I am hoping I am not completely SOL. Does anyone have a WH14NS40 NS40.bin firmware that they can share with me? I've already tried using the official LG firmware flasher, but it sees the drive as a NS50.bin (2nd gen) drive now and gives me a mismatch error if I try to flash to the NS40.bin (1st gen). The firmware flasher I used is able to ignore the model/firmware mismatch and flash it anyway, but it won't go back to the old one as the old firmware (NS40.bin) is not an option. Anyway, my drive still powers up, opens and closes, and is recognized by the system, but can no longer read any disc. Don't make the same mistake as me, buy a newer version of this drive or another drive for UHD support. The disc actually cracked almost in half, and the only way I could get it out of the drive was to unplug the computer and use the old paperclip-in-the-emergency-eject-hole trick. I only had one coaster out of the bunch, but to be fair, that was a pretty spectacular failure.

They cost the same as the Verbatim LTH's ($15 Micro Center in Chicago), but you get five more discs for the same price, plus I managed to get excellent burns at 12x, twice what they're rated at. I decided to go with a 25-pack of ValueDiscs from Micro Center. They would burn all right, but the burns would be unreadable. Only five discs out of the pack didn't end up as coasters. I went through nearly an entire Verbatim 20-pack. I bought the same drive at Micro Center to replace an earlier LG BD burner, and I wish I had known about the LTH issue before I bought it. If you have an issue that needs fixing, it probably won't be fixed. LG isn't very interested in releasing firmware updates for any of their drives, so you need to be aware of that. I mostly use the LG for ripping and the Pioneer for burning. So avoid BD-R LTH discs with your drives. I've also got a Pioneer BD burner (don't remember the model as it's 2 years old and they don't make it anymore anyway) and it's a much better drive. I can tell you from personal experience that my LG BD drive absolutely hates BD-R LTH media. If you have specific questions or problems you can ask, but your post is really pretty vague. And despite being stored in temperature controlled conditions and away from direct sunlight, many of my Lightscribe labels are fading into nothingness. So count your blessings that you don't have Lightscribe.
